Quid liceat nescimus adhuc . . : The quotation is a travesty of a passage in Ovid’s Metamorphoses IX:554f. “Quid liceat nescimus adhuc et cuncta licere credimus” (“What is allowed we have not yet discovered, and we believe all things allowed”). Chydenius has replaced “et cuncta” with “sed aequa” and the passage can be read “We do not yet know what is allowed, but we believe that justice is allowed.”
